Lesson 7: Shades
A shade is created by adding black to a true color.
Artists use shades of colors to create shadows in their work.
Activities:
1. True color to black: For this activity you will need 4 little containers (I used plastic condiment containers), black paint, any color paint of your choice, four paint brushes, a palette knife or something to stir paint with, and a sheet of white paper. Watch video lesson on my YouTube channel.
- Pick a color and put equal amounts in each container.
- Leave the first container alone for your control or true color.
- Add one drop of black paint to the second container and stir.
- One the white paper paint a strip of each shade you made starting with the true color.
- Paint a picture with the leftover paint.
Supplies:
- paint any color
- black paint
- plastic cups or a couple small paper plates
- sheet of paper
- paint brushes - one for each color
- palette knife or something to mix paint
2. Pick a color. Go to hardware store and collect paint swatches of shades of that color. Make sure students pick colors that have black added not white. Create a collage using swatches.
Supplies:
- paint swatches - colors with black added
- scissors (parent help may be needed)
- glue
- poster board
