Mini Art Lessons: Monochromatic Color Scheme
Lesson 8: Monochromatic Colors
Monochromatic colors are a base color with all its shades and tints including any variations of the color.
Activities:
1. Abstract Monochromatic Art: Pick one to two shapes or simple objects like a shoe. You can use a coloring page if you want but it needs to be something simple that you can trace several times. Draw the shape or object several times on a piece of poster board or canvas. Shapes can overlap. Using one color create as many shades or tints of that color as you want. Use the shades and tints to color in each shape or object. Video instructions on my YouTube channel.
Supplies:
- paint paper - poster board or card stock will do
- paint any color
- white paint
- black paint
- paint palette - paper plates with do
- palette knife or something to stir paint
- stencil - a simple object you draw and cut out or a simple object cut out of a coloring book.
- pencil
- several paint brushes - one per color

2. Works of Art Scavenger Hunt. With a parent or guardian search the web to find several pieces of art with a monochromatic color scheme. What is the true color? What affect does using one color create? Compare two works of art that use different true colors. Which color do you like better? Why? Use this Compare and Contrast worksheet for a more in-depth study.
