Mini Art Lessons: Tints
Lesson 6: Tints
A tint is created when you add white to a true color.
When you add white you change the intensity of the color which creates dull pastel colors.
Activities:
1. Creating Tints: Gather 4 plastic sandwich bags that seal (Ziploc bags), any color washable paint, and white washable paint. Fill each bag a quarter full of the color paint. To watch this lesson check out my YouTube video.
a. In the first bag, put 3 squirts of white paint, seal bag, and knead paint until it mixes.
b. In the second bag, put 6 squirts of white paint, seal bag, and knead paint until it mixes.
c. In the third bag, put 9 squirts of white paint, seal bag, and knead paint until it mixes.
d. Leave the fourth bag alone as a sample of the true color.
e. Let students use the paint they made to paint a picture on a canvas, canvas board, or a thick piece of paper.
Supplies:
- paint any color
- white paint
- 4 plastic sandwich bags with zippers
- *optional - paper or canvas and brushes
2. Paint Swatch Collage: Go to hardware store or a store where paint is sold. Collect paint swatches that show the tints of a color. Make sure students pick colors that have white added not black. On a piece of paperboard (cereal box), poster board, or another type of stiff paper create a collage using the colors on the swatches you collected.
Supplies:
- paint swatches - colors with white added
- paperboard (cereal box) or poster board
- scissors
- glue
